NTFP, Technology Implementation & Value Addition

Promotion of technological value addition to agriculture and horticulture

  • Plantation and establishment of processing and packaging unit for Moringa leaf powder (Moringa Oleifera). Its leaves are extremely valuable source of nutrition for people of all ages. Nutritional analysis indicates that Moringa leaves contain affluence of essential, disease-preventing nutrients.
  • Establishment of a Bio-sindoor/ Organic sindoor-making unit from the seeds of the lipstick trees (Bixa Orellana). PSC proposes to develop nurseries to grow more trees to fulfill future demands.
  • Propagation of Gulancha/Giloi. Since it has been used widely in Ayurveda and cosmetic industries therefore MANT will propose to explore these sectors through PSC.
  • Cultivation and establishment of a processing and packaging unit for receiving powder and paste from Ginger.
  • Turmeric powder and oil extraction unit will be encouraged by MANT. The domestic and export demand for turmeric is rising because it is seen as an immunity-boosting product. Curcumin present in turmeric has antiseptic properties; thus, it is used for wound healing or applied to a bruise.
  • Mushroom cultivation – Mushroom culture (Oyster mushroom, Button mushroom, and Paddy straw mushroom) with indigenous techniques will be promoted in tribal household as a source of nutrition supplement. The family having children and a mother will be given due importance. The required training for the purpose would be given by a professional trainer.
  • MANT proposes to cultivate medicinal plants i.e. Piper Longum and Piper Chaba for their huge market potential, popularly used as spices in the preparation of Bengali cuisines, especially in meat. The fruits and seeds will be packaged and will be marketed through PSC.

Value addition to Non-Timber Forest Produce

  • Sal (Shorea robusta) is a major means of survival for a large number of forest dwellers in the proposed areas of the project. In the intervening blocks the tribal depend on sal seeds, leaves and resins for their livelihood. The income would be increased if we can add value to that seed. The sal seed butter has a huge market potential and due to its rich oleic acid and stearic acid content, Sal Butter works as an excellent natural moisturizer and softener for dry skin. It is used in cosmetics products. Therefore MANT proposes to set up an extraction unit by involving the indigenous community.
  • Non-alcoholic Mahua product would be encouraged, popularized and marketed through PSC. Mahua (Madhuca longifolia) is a multipurpose tree in true sense which fulfils three fundamental needs of tribal individuals i.e. Food, Fodder, and Fuel. It is abundant in the intervening area i.e. Purulia district. The flowers (Non-fermented) would be processed to make Mahua Jam, Pickle, and Ladoo. Mahua oil locally named “Kochra tel” is unrefined and the process of oil extraction
is time-consuming. To reduce the drudgery small-scale oil extraction unit would be explored and will intervene in the refinement of the Mahua oil. The necessary chemical analysis, testing, and FSSAI certification would be done for the purpose.
  • Babul gum (Gond) will be collected to prepare ladoos which are very popular in various parts of India. It has good medicinal value and widely used in Ayurvedic medicine. PSC will explore its processing mechanism and market possibilities.

Non-edible commercially important oil extraction from wild resources through PSC

  • Kusum (Schleichera oleosa) tree is widely available in the target area, its seeds will be used for oil extraction. These products are in high demand both in local and national markets.
  • Neem (Azadirachta indica) tree is also very much widely available in the project area and neem seeds and leaves will be processed to have oil as well as bio-pesticides and fertilizer.
  • Karanja (Millettia pinnata) seeds are available in large quantities, hence, will be used to extract oil and prepare bio pesticides.
